On March 30, 2022, the European Commission (the EC) published the “EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles” (the ESSCT) as a part of the broader European Green Deal. This strategy is integral to Europe’s ambitious goal to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. This strategy aims to reshape the textiles sector, making it greener, more resilient, and competitive while reducing its environmental and climate footprint. The ESSCT addresses the entire lifecycle of textile products and proposes a suite of coordinated actions to overhaul how textiles are produced, used, and managed at their end of life. The strategy is employed as a foundational framework to develop binding legislation.
