Cost-Benefit Analysis of Green Chemistry

There is a widespread perception that greener chemistry is more expensive than conventional chemistry, often due to a simple kg-to-kg price comparison of chemicals. This study analyzes and provides clear guidance on calculating process costs while highlighting the benefits of an integrated sustainability approach. Traditionally, only the chemical cost per kg is considered, but this new perspective also accounts for the quantity of chemicals used or reduced, water consumption, energy needs, and overall time efficiency (though time as a cost is not included). Ultimately, this study seeks to offer a comprehensive view of the costs associated with adopting greener chemistry by adjusting production processes with the aim on sustainability.
