This Black Friday UK consumers are predicted to spend close to £10 billion pounds, much of this in fashion and footwear stores.
The COVID-19 crisis has exposed pre-existing deep inequities in the fashion industry. Women workers in countries such as Cambodia, where our clothes and shoes are made, are facing rising debt, malnutrition and stress, scraping by each month. What is worse is that the pandemic has created new opportunities for exploitation: subcontracting in factories with less protection and more harassment.
Join us this Black Friday, 25th November 2022, as we present the findings of our ReFashion study into the effect of COVID-19 on Cambodian garment workers, and screen two films illustrating workers’ stories. The event takes place the same day as a Bill calling for a Fashion Watchdog, to ensure retailers adhere to workers’ rights, is discussed in UK parliament.
We will be joined by panellists dedicated to disrupting Fast Fashion in different ways:
- Katherine Brickell (Chair), Professor of Human Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London.
- Fiona Gooch, Senior private sector policy adviser, Transform Trade (formerly Traidcraft).
- Ruth MacGilp, Communications Manager, Fashion Revolution.
- Joe Sutcliffe, Worker Rights and Gender Justice Consultant.
