- Co-organized by the ILO’s Regional Office for Asia and Pacific and the Sectoral Policies Department (SECTOR), with the support of the ILO/IFC Better Work programme, and the ILO-Sida Decent Work in the Garment Sector Supply Chains in Asia project, this seminar will cover challenges and opportunities for decent and sustainable work arising from automation, digitalization and other drivers of change in the aftermath of COVID-19.
The objective of the seminar is to take stock of recent developments in the textiles and garment sector in the Asian countries and to promote sharing of information and good practices on how constituents have been addressing the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and other drivers of change in the sector.
Bringing together ILO tripartite constituents and leading voices from the sector, it will examine the implications of such drivers of change to decent work in the sector. In particular, promote a tripartite dialogue on:
● The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the measures to build back better;
● Automation, digitalization, new materials and other technological advances, and the need to ensure productive employment and decent work;
● Climate change and policies to mitigate and adapt to a warmer planet, and the need to ensure a just transition to environmental sustainability;
● Globalization and shifting trade patterns, including increasing regional trade and near/re-shoring, and the need for an enabling environment for sustainable enterprises and the protection of workers’ rights; and
● Demographic shifts within the region and changing consumer preferences, and how to advance a human-centred approach for a brighter future of work in the garment and textile sector.
