The GIZ-FABRIC project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
To successfully shape the desired economic growth in Asia’s textile and garment production in a sustainable way, many parties need to be involved. The GIZ-FABRIC project brings together people from the Asian industry, public sectors, NGOs and from international buyers, promoting knowledge transfer and cooperation. FABRIC is working in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Vietnam and together with China to strengthen an industry that offers quality jobs, protects the environment and contributes to economic growth.
Around 800,000 workers are employed in the garment sector in Cambodia, about 80% of whom are young women who remit income to support the livelihoods of their families. Most of them have moved from rural areas to work in the city, often come from low-income households and have a low level of education.
The Women Empowerment (WE) House is established as a space serving the needs of women workers in the garment factory and textile industry and should provide three key services: a café area for informal exchange, counselling services is provided to address work related conflicts and in complex family situations, and weekday and Sunday trainings provide targeted information on issues related to the labour law, working conditions and topic around social awareness. The WE House is established jointly by the GIZ project FABRIC, the NGO Solidarity Center and the Women Union Network (WUN).
WE House is a safe and fair space for women workers in the garment factory and textile industry. It was first launched in Myanmar in 2018. The WE House in Myanmar has been providing a range of services to women workers, including counseling, legal aid, and training on labor rights. It has also been active in raising awareness of women's rights and promoting gender equality in the garment industry.
The success of the WE House in Myanmar has led to its replication in other countries, including Cambodia. The WE House in Cambodia was established on June 15, 2021, by the Solidarity Center, the Women Union Network (WUN), and the GIZ-FABRIC. The WE House in Cambodia provides similar services to the WE House in Myanmar, and it is also committed to promoting women's empowerment in the garment industry.
The establishment of the WE House in Cambodia is a significant step forward for women's empowerment in the country. It provides a safe space for women workers to access support services and counseling, and it helps to raise awareness of their rights. The WE House is also committed to promoting gender equality in the garment industry, which is an important issue in Cambodia.
