What is the ILO project "Future of Work in Textile and Clothing" about?
The project "Future of Work in Textile and Clothing: Forecasting and Developing Skills in Viet Nam to Advance Decent Work and Productivity in the Sector" aims to support the Vietnamese government, employers, and workers' organizations in predicting and addressing future skills needs in the garment sector. This initiative is designed to ensure that the sector remains resilient, competitive, and sustainable in the face of rapid changes such as digitalization, globalization, climate change, and demographic shifts.
Why is this project important for Viet Nam?
Viet Nam is one of the largest exporters of garment goods globally, with the textile and garment sector being a crucial part of its economy. Despite significant growth, the sector faces a skills gap necessary to drive future development amid digital and global changes. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the need for skills forecasting and development to ensure the industry's resilience and sustainability, ultimately fostering better-quality jobs and inclusive growth.
What are the main objectives of the project?
The project aims to advance decent work and productivity in the textile and clothing sector. Support national partners in anticipating and developing necessary skills. Align with the vocational education and training strategy and the development strategy for the textile, garment, and footwear industries. Contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 8, which focuses on promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.
What are the expected outcomes of the project?
- Equip tripartite constituents and stakeholders with the knowledge to develop skills strategies and programs for the textile and clothing sector.
- Strengthen the capacity of tripartite constituents to create and implement a skills strategy for the sector.
- Enhance the institutional and legal framework supporting sector-based skills development approaches.
Disseminate project outputs to inform skills strategies in other Asian countries, fostering the sustainability of its results.
