'No Safe Harbour for Forced Labour': A Civil Society Conversation

Join us on February 21, 2024 at 8:00 am EST for a virtual panel discussion on import bans against forced labour. Civil society experts from around the world will discuss this powerful tool to combat forced labour in global supply chains.

Import prohibitions against goods made with forced labour are a hot topic in global trade and human rights discussions. Until recently, only the United States had import restrictions on products tainted with forced labour. No more. Advocates across the major importing economies are demanding import bans. Civil society organisations are leading the charge, pressing for a world where there is 'no safe harbour' for goods made using forced labour.

Canada, Mexico, and the EU are all poised to begin implementing their own import prohibitions. But import bans cannot be viewed in a silo. Emerging mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence (mHREDD) laws and other corporate accountability mechanisms go hand-in-hand with import bans against forced labour.

Our panel of experts will assess the impact of existing import bans in this larger enforcement context.
