Corporate human rights grievance mechanisms (“CGMs”) are a critical component of business and human rights and mandated by the UN Guiding Principles. Rapidly expanding human rights due diligence laws also often require businesses to operate or participate in meaningful CGMs. But how should CGMs work in practice? Does the international guidance in relation to CGMs help or hinder practitioners in creating effective CGMs? And how are those running CGMs reacting to new developments in the field?

This panel of leading practitioners from CGMs will reflect on what makes for an effective grievance mechanism and international efforts to stimulate effective CGMs. Questions will include:

  • What are the essential elements of an effective grievance mechanism?
  • How have the UNGPs’ effectiveness criteria and subsequent guidance affected the CGMs they work on? How do they envisage those instruments affecting their own CGMs and other CGMs in the future?
  • How are requirements for CGMs in mandatory human rights due diligence laws affecting CGMs now and in the future?
