Promoting Gender Equality in Asia's Garment Industry: 5 Strategic Approaches

By Juliette Tafreschi, June 26th, 2024

The World Economic Forum suggests five ways to integrate gender equality into the Asian garment industry's supply chains. Thus, according to WEF, implementing more equitable policies and proactive measures, the Asian garment industry has the potential to lift millions of women workers out of poverty while promoting inclusive economic growth.

Eliminate Gender-Related Risks in the Workplace
Employers must ensure a harassment-free environment by establishing grievance redressal mechanisms to handle complaints of bullying, sexual abuse, and harassment. These mechanisms should be transparent, unbiased, and maintain confidentiality. Additionally, gender sensitization and capacity-building training can help employees recognize and challenge biases.

Compulsory Social Protections for Women
Implement social protection programs to reduce inequality and poverty, addressing women's economic insecurity, which is increased by their underrepresentation. These programs should include social insurance for unemployment, childcare, health, pregnancy, disability and old age. Examples such as Pakistan's Benazir Income Support Program provide regular transfers to people in need.

Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value
Address gender wage inequality by establishing pay equity committees with significant female representation. Ensuring equal pay can improve business reputation, boost morale and productivity, and attract and retain talent.

Empower Women in a Human-Centred Future of Work
Focus on lifelong digital training for women to adapt to changes brought by AI, automation, and robotics. This will help women reskill and upskill, preparing them for evolving job requirements.

Ensure Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
Promote OSH management systems to protect workers from hazards like unsafe electrical systems, flammable materials, and hazardous chemicals. Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) and conduct regular safety checks to prevent injuries and disabilities.
