amfori Speaks at the 12th Global Footwear Sustainability Summit 2024

The 12th Global Footwear Sustainability Summit 2024 was successfully held on 29-30 August at the Sheraton Dongguan, China. With the theme of "Sustainability in Action: Transforming the World Footwear with Sustainability & Circularity," the Summit gathers nearly a hundred C-level executives and sustainability leaders from the footwear industry to exchange views and discuss sustainable practices in action.

Kicking off the summit on Day 1, Mr. Bruno Güemes Delgado, Product Manager Environmental at amfori, took the stage as the first speaker with his session titled "Achieve Environmental Sustainability in Footwear Manufacturing & Supply Chain". In his pre-recorded presentation, Bruno addressed the regulatory challenges and environmental concerns that necessitate immediate and sustained action. He emphasized the role of amfori BEPI (Business Environmental Performance Initiative) as a useful tool for the footwear industry to focus on the 8 Environmental Performance Areas and key metrics most relevant to operations. He further highlighted the need for continuous improvement that environmental sustainability is an ongoing process that requires commitment and proactive measures.

“Environmental due diligence is important for the footwear industry. By leveraging tools like amfori BEPI, you can systematically address and mitigate environmental risks throughout the supply chain. We also believe that continuous improvement is the key to success, and tougher we can lead the way in developing sustainable practices that not only protect the environment, but also enhance operational efficiency and reputation.” Bruno said.

Bruno added that members have expressed their satisfaction with the positive outcomes achieved after adopting amfori BEPI. Building on this success, amfori has launched a pilot programme for business partners in China to enable them to better understand and conduct environmental risk assessments. By doing so, factory management will be empowered to identify environmental risks at their production sites and develop effective continuous improvement plans for sustainable production.
