amfori has made a Pledge to 'increase the visibility and transparancy of social and environmental conditions in supply chains'. This is a week where global actors are focusing on environment-related issues, with the 50th edition of World Environment Day and the UN preparatory meeting for the next global summit on climate action, COP 27.

The Pledge is part of the Sustainability Pledge initiative launched by the UN agency UNECE. This includes a toolkit of policy recommendations, implementation guidelines and standards that provide traceability and transparency solutions for tracking garment or footwear from its raw components to the point of purchase. This makes it easier to assert and verify sustainability claims in the industry.

amfori’s Pledge on increasing the visibility and transparency of social and environmental conditions in supply chains includes commitments on, amongst others, increasing the number of innovative initiatives for traceability in supply chains and on developing new features in amfori BEPI and amfori BSCI on traceability.

This is to be achieved in collaboration with amfori’s partners - the Open Apparel Registry (OAR) and ZDHC and reinforces the idea that traceability is a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders who share information and technologies throughout the supply chain. Committing to the Pledge furthermore provides the opportunity for peer-to-peer learning amongst other pledgers and opens opportunities for advocacy and strategic communication on traceability and transparency.

Advancing traceability and transparency in supply chains can be an important supporting tool to help realise the message of this year’s World Environment Day of Only one Earth and to contribute to ongoing efforts to realise the promises of COP 26 being discussed at the UN Climate meeting this week.
